Making an Impact with Compassionate Care
Understanding Multiple Sclerosis
Understanding Multiple Sclerosis At Chiltern Healthcare, we recognise that Multiple Sclerosis affects each individual uniquely. We are committed to providing unwavering support tailored to your specific symptoms and level of care requirements.
What is Multiple Sclerosis?
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a neurological condition that occurs when the body’s immune system attacks the protective coating (myelin sheath) surrounding nerve cells. This damage disrupts the messages traveling along the nerve fibers, leading to slowed, distorted, or blocked nerve signals.
Symptoms of MS The symptoms of MS vary from person to person, depending on the affected nerves. Some of the most common symptoms include:
• Loss of balance and dizziness
• Stiffness or muscle spasms
• Tremors
• Speech difficulties
• Fatigue
• Pain
• Bladder and bowel problems
• Vision problems
• Difficulty swallowing
• Challenges with memory and thinking
• Mood and mental health issues
Our Approach to MS Care
Whether you are dealing with relapsing MS or progressive MS, Chiltern Healthcare is dedicated to providing comprehensive support. We understand that your symptoms are highly individual, and your care needs may change over time.
To ensure personalised care, we conduct thorough assessments for all our clients before initiating any home care services. We offer a high level of flexibility and adjust your care plan as needed. For instance, during an MS relapse, we can increase the frequency of home visits and the duration of our caregiver’s presence. Our experienced and compassionate caregivers are available to assist with personal care, daily routines, activities, and even shopping, based on your requirements.
As a quality care provider, we highly recommend and encourage the creation of an Advance Care Plan.
An Advance Care Plan enables you to document your preferences and decisions in advance, including your care choices and preferences for medical treatments. It ensures that your wishes will be respected, to the best of our ability, in situations where you may be unable to make decisions for yourself. Having an advance care plan in place brings peace of mind not only to you but also to your loved ones.
