Decoding Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral Palsy encompasses a diverse spectrum of conditions, casting its impact on movement and coordination. This enigmatic condition stems from brain damage or insufficient brain development, occurring before, during, or shortly after birth. Typically, diagnosis is established soon after birth or during the early stages of life.

Unveiling the Mosaic of Cerebral Palsy Types

Cerebral Palsy manifests in four distinct types, each adorned with its unique set of symptoms:

There are 4 types of Cerebral Palsy, with each type having different symptoms:

  1. Spastic Cerebral Palsy: Characterised by rigid and tense muscles (exacerbated during rapid movements), leading to limited range of motion.
  2. Dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy: Muscles oscillate between stiffness and laxity, resulting in involuntary muscle movements and spasms.
  3. Ataxic Cerebral Palsy: Impairs balance and coordination, often culminating in tremors and unsteady movements.
  4. Mixed Cerebral Palsy: A fusion of symptoms from one or more types.

Beyond the aforementioned symptoms, individuals may encounter:

  • Difficulties with eating and swallowing
  • Challenges in speech and communication
    Seizures
  • Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD)
  • Bladder and bowel problems
  • Spinal curvature
  • Dislocating hips
  • Vision or hearing impairments
  • Learning difficulties
